Legality of watching something for free online?

Because I do not want to watch something for free and illegal I just want to make sure about whether watching the HBO series Game of Thrones was legal as there are so many sites which have free episodes posted? Same question applies to the fact that many people who watch free anime for example on various sites was legal as well? thanks for any clarification
