My husband, US citizen with permanent residence, offered job w/Canadian based company working in Australia?

My husband has been offered a position with a Canadian based company working in between Canada and Australia 6 months out of the year. How would our taxes need to be filed and what are the legalities as US citizen living in the US working abroad 1/2 the year?
