Do you need permission to write a story with characters based on real people?

I want to write a fictional story and I think that some members of a band I like would be good inspiration for five of the characters in my story. But would I have to ask them specifically for permission to do so. I mean legally of course. I know it would be more polight to ask but I'm curious as to the legality issues of the matter.
