How long typically can one keep/maintain corn rows?

I'm thinking about getting my hair corn row'ed for first time this coming Friday morning for my birthday. Is getting my hair done (braided) usually only good for one day or is there a way to maintain it so I can leave my corn rows in for a few days? Any advice?
