Is it possible to restore an ipod touch 4g to an ipod touch 2g backup?

Recently, my 2nd generation 16 GB ipod touch, which was on the 4.2.1 firmware, was stolen. There were some important notes on there that I'd like to retrieve. The notes are saved in the backup (I'm absolutely sure, I've done this before) that is created each time my ipod syncs with itunes. I want to get a new ipod now, preferably a 4th generation 32 GB ipod touch. I was wondering if I could restore the new 4G 32GB ipod touch to the backup file of the old, stolen 2G 16GB ipod touch to retrieve the important notes. The legality of the method by which the notes are recovered doesn't matter.
