What dose it take to validate a written, personal contract?

i just saw south park's "imagination-land." (series of 3 episodes of south park combined into one short movie) and i have a question about the legality of going to cort with a written doent like that without a seal or whatever it is that allegedly validates a contract. (at least what i've been told while having no knowledge of this department)
